Donor Relations Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:  Donor Relations Specialist is responsible for nurturing relationships with mid-level donors and implementing solicitation and stewardship programs of the Province. They ensure that printed and electronic development materials (appeals, newsletters, social media, and other collateral) are created and disseminated to retain donors and expand the donor list. As a component of stewardship, they work with Sister Connectors and (as appropriate) donor relations managers to provide a personal touch.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Create and implement robust donor-focused recruitment and retention strategies, particularly for first-time donors, recurring donors and mid-level donors.
  2. Directly steward about 300 mid-level donors (includes creating a contact, marketing and communication plan focused on fulfilling the donor's interests), encouraging continued support and identifying potential to be in a major gift portfolio. Modify the plan as circumstances change to achieve goals.
  3. Create and implement an annual Advancement Communication Plan, to include:
  • Manage production (content, timeline, printing, mailing) of publications in collaboration with the Communications Department. Includes printed and electronic communications and social media presence.
  • Write occasional newsletter articles, thank you letters, social media posts, etc.
  • Maintain archive of Advancement materials for easy retrieval.
  • Manage outsourced resources for design and writing as needed.
  1. Implement Province-wide donor stewardship strategies including
  • Organize Sisters to sign cards, call donors to say thank you, and other appropriate stewardship.
  • In collaboration with Sisters, help plan and implement events (virtual or in-person) that engage donors and prospects in the SNJM charism.
  1. Take the lead with the Advancement Team in scheduling donor events and creating templates and content to be used across the Province.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish satisfactorily the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing/public relations, non-profit management, or related field. Five years’ experience in fundraising, preferably in religious organizations, and particularly direct mail and donor stewardship.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Must be supportive of the mission of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. 
  • Demonstrated successful experience designing, implementing, and evaluating fundraising initiatives whose purpose is to build a long-term base of support, including both printed and online campaigns.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Ability to write persuasive fundraising requests and thoughtful acknowledgements and write and edit for the newsletter and social media.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills to interact professionally, diplomatically and productively with colleagues and contacts at all levels.
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Working knowledge of database programs; Donor Perfect experience preferred
  • Comfortable with broadcast email systems; Constant Contact experience preferred
  • Proficient skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook; advanced skills preferred.
  • Ability to read and write cursive handwriting.
  • Attention to detail, project management skills, and being highly organized are critical.
  • Ability to take initiative, be self-directed, and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • High level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Knowledge of SNJM, women religious organizations, or non-profit environment preferred.
  • Ability to work with ambiguity in a changing environment.
  • Solid relationship-building skills.  Able to seamlessly interface with donors, Sisters, and staff.
  • Ability to implement and monitor strategic advancement plans.
  • Ability to articulate the case for support so that individuals “buy in” to the vision/mission/goals and with sufficient effectiveness to secure major gifts.
  • Ability to occasionally travel and/or work weekends and evenings.
